The UYA Academic Support program takes place during the school year from mid-November until mid-April. It is available for middle and high school students to participate in enriching learning activities on Saturday afternoons, focusing on math and literacy. The program is held at Marian Anderson Recreation Center and is open to the South Philadelphia community. It typically serves 20-30 secondary students throughout the school year. In addition to an hour of academic support, students also participate in writing workshops, field trips, and blogging exercises. Those students who participate in the academic support program can become eligible for the summer "Rising Stars/Young Leaders in Government Program" that takes place in July and August.
About the Rising Stars Summer Program;
The Rising Stars/Young Leaders in Government (YLG) Summer Program is a 6 week, academic enrichment and work preparedness program for high achieving African American males in grades 9 –12. Each week, young men in the South Philadelphia area come together to discuss topics of social justice and the impact of these issues on their daily lives. They learn how to actively participate in local and state government, work on enhancing their literacy and math skills, help in community projects, and attend field trips designed to increase their awareness about the city.
Rising Stars/YLG, in its second year of operation, and is held at the historical Marian Anderson Recreation Center located at 17th & Fitzwater Streets in South Philadelphia. The program offerings reflect the vision of Pennsylvania State Representative Kenyatta Johnson to empower young men within his legislative district to assume an active, competent and responsible role in government activities.
We have decided to use this blog as a place for news, opinions, video, and photography having to deal with our experiences in the program. Please take a look at our writing and feel free to comment. Thank you, Rising Stars/YLG
